The Therapeutic Benefits of Myofascial Release

What is myofascial release?
Myofascial release is a gentle, pleasurable technique done to release connective tissue in the body.

Fascia or connective tissue is the most abundant tissue in the body. It is comprised of collagen and elastin. It is one unit (just as skin is one unit) and is 3 dimensional, in that it lines the inside of the skin, lines the outside of each muscle and each muscle layer, and also outlines each muscle fiber, forming the tendons of each muscle.

Because it is one unit, when a trauma (emotional or physical) affects the connective tissue in an area of the body, the alterations can radiate out to other areas of the body. Chemical changes can result, as well, which are factors in conditions such as:
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Polymyalgia
  • Necritizing fascitis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Joint mobility restrictions
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Postural restrictions
  • Sciatica
  • Circulatory restrictions
  • Lymphedema
Addressing fascia in a gentle way to promote healing and discourage further injury is necessary in pain management, mobility, and circulation.
